Purpose

CT scanning is considerably superior to conventional x-rays for evaluation of the paranasal sinuses. A limited examination may be performed to assess the extent of sinusitis. A full examination is performed when detailed anatomy of the nasal structures is required as a pre-operative planning procedure.

Preparation

If you are pregnant, it is important to inform the radiographer before you have any scans.

Procedure

You will be required to lie supine on a CT bed with your head held in a support holder. The table will move so that your head is positioned within the ring of the gantry. An examination usually lasts approximately 5 minutes. There will be no pain or discomfort associated with the procedure.

After Procedure

Normal activities may be continued.
